Today students learned about the 1915 film Birth of a Nation, and its influence on racial stereotypes and portrayal of Reconstruction as a failure. With this context, students viewed a series of postcards of lynchings. As the viewed the pictures and heard the descriptions, students focused on four elements: time, victim, location, and reason.
