The Great Migration
Students looked at a series of paintings by Jacob Lawrence. They can be viewed at this site. The paintings depict the Great Migration of African Americans from the South to the North between world wars. Students kept track of push and pull forces of migration as they read the captions to the paintings. The also, wrote down some of the outcomes of the migration such as overcrowding. After, students read an article, The War on Telephone Poles, about lynching - a push force of migration. Finally students listened to Billie Holiday singing the anti-lynching, Strange Fruit (above). Pay attention to the lyrics! Students turned in their DBQs.
Have a great break!
