QUIZ: Contact and Conquest of the Americas

There will be a quiz next Wednesday/Thursday, September 23 - 24. You will be expected to answer two of the following questions at random. You should prepare by reviewing your books, notes, and handouts from class. You will be expected to reference your knowledge of key terms, ideas, people, and events.

• Compare and contrast two pre-Columbian cultures. Consider their government, religious beliefs, and technologies.
• Briefly explain the involvement of Brazil in the “New World”. Why did the Portuguese turn to Africa for slaves? Why were African slaves “preferable”?
• Identify characteristics of non-sedentary, semi-sedentary, and sedentary cultures.
• Identify and assess the relative advantages of the Europeans and disadvantages of the Latin Americans at the time of the contact.
• Briefly describe the differences in the use and treatment of slaves in Africa to the use of slaves in the “New World”.
• Who were the Moors? What was the re-conquest of Spain? How was it similar to Spanish conquest in the “new world”?
