Cold War: Cuba and Nicargua

Agenda 4/20-25:
  1. Students read a series of excerpts, commenting and making observations on life in Cuba prior to the revolution. Students brainstormed a list of terms that characterized this period.
  2. Students read from Born in Blood Fire, focusing on pages 264-273 (The Cuban Revolution)
  3. Students read sections from Fidel Castro's History Will Absolve Me speech. They noted problems and solutions in the text.
  4. Students watched a brief clip about the Cuban Revolution [first 25 minutes]
  5. I reviewed the BBF reading and explained how such a small group of rebels were able to take power over a US-backed dictator (Batista) in Cuba.
  6. Students read from Born in Blood Fire, focusing on pages 299-302 (The Sandinistas and Contras in Nicaragua). They took notes, made a timeline, and defined key terms.
  7. Students read quotes about one of four people involved in Nicaragua during the Cold War: Sandino, Somoza, The FSLN, or the Contras. They filled in a character retrieval chart as they read. Afterwards, they paired up with another student and wrote two-voice poems about Nicaragua during the 1980s.
