Was Lincoln Racist?

Today students discussed and created differing arguments over whether Abraham Lincoln was a racist.

Agenda 11/14/12:

1. I talked about secession petitions that have begun in the aftermath of the presidential election. I showed the trailer to the new film, Lincoln.
2. Students interpreted historical documents and created arguments in support and opposition of the contention that Lincoln was racist. Students wrote about their personal thoughts and turn them in.
3. Students debated their positions, then discussed their personal feelings on the matter.
4. We finished by listening to an interview with Columbia University historian, Eric Foner, about Lincoln's thoughts on slavery.
