Born in Blood and Fire, Chapter 1
Agenda 10/3-5:
- Students took an IB practice exam about Cortez and the fall of the Aztec Empire. Students interpreted a series of documents and answered a series of analysis questions.
- Students read the Introduction and Chapter 1 from Born in Blood an Fire. They answered these questions.
- Students chose ONE prompt from the first chapter of Born in Blood and Fire and wrote a half-page response. Prompts:
- The “encounter” involves the collisions of peoples and cultures from three continents--the Americas, Europe, and Africa. Examine some of the key points that Chasteen makes in his explanation of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
- Discuss the role of Catholic priests in the Americas and evaluate how specific priests worked on behalf of indigenous peoples and what change was brought through their actions. (from Countercurrents)
- CHALLENGE: Compare and contrast Chasteen’s use of the terms “Liberalism” and “Nationalism” when used in the international context (not US usage), as defined in the introduction to BBF. (from Introduction)
- Providing examples, identify characteristics of non-sedentary, semi-sedentary, and sedentary cultures.
- Define what the Iberian Peninsula is and evaluate the importance of some of the key moments of its history from the years 711-1600. Then, analyze how this history influenced its two main cultures as they began their conquest of the Americas.
