QUIZ: Indigenous Societies and European Exploration

Who was Bartolome las Casas? What did he observe? How did his descriptions and writing differ from Christopher Columbus’? There will be a quiz on Thursday/Friday 10/5-6. You will be asked to answer two of the following questions. You will also be required to analyze a historical document. Use your materials, vocab, and texts from class to prepare.
  • Describe the features of one pre-Columbian civilization.
  • Using examples, explain the differences between non-sedentary, semi-sedentary, and sedentary peoples of the Americas.
  • Explain Jared Diamond's theory of geographic luck. How does this theory explain why Europeans were able to conquer pre-Columbian civilizations despite having fewer numbers. What helped the Europeans that is not part of Diamond's theory?

  • What was the Columbian exchange? Analyze the effects of the Columbian exchange on the peoples of Europe and the Americas.
