Assimilation and Appropriation

Agenda 11/23-12/3:

1. Students learned about attempts to assimilate Native Americans. They listened the first 10 minutes of this podcast about the Carlisle Indian School, taking notes. After, they read this excerpt by Mary Crow Dog, taking notes on a chart labeled:  Assimilation  |  Mistreatment  |  Resistance.
2. Students were introduced to the concept of cultural appropriation. I showed them this website as an example.  
3. Students listened to several songs thinking about appropriation of Native Americans.
4. Students began watching the film Reel Injun taking notes about appropriation and stereotyping of Native Americans in movies.
