Reconstruction and Memory

Agenda 10/27-28:

  1. Students viewed a variety of media take notes on the question, "How is Reconstruction remembered?" They listened to several songs.
  2. Students watched film clips from several films.
  3. Students read excerpts from two articles about how The Civil War is remembered in the South.
  4. Students discussed the articles and these questions:"How is the Civil War and South of the past remembered? How should it be remembered? Taught? Should places and monuments named after Confederate heroes be renamed? Is there a better way to commemorate the past?"
HOMEWORK:
There will be a QUIZ on Reconstruction 11/2-3. Below are the prompts. You will be given TWO to answer at random.
  • Compare the situation faced by former slaves, plantation owners, and confederate leaders after the Civil War.
  • Explain the changes and continuity (sameness) in the South following the Civil War.
  • Explain Reconstruction in literal and figurative terms. Provide specific examples.
  • Who were the Radical Republicans? Assess how well the ideals and goals of the Radical Republicans regarding Reconstruction matched reality.
