The Panama Canal

Agenda 2/8:

1. I reviewed the previous lesson about Banana Republics
2. Students read a series of excerpts from Galeano's Century of the Wind, about US involvement in Central America including the creation of Panama.
3. Students read a series of primary documents about the independence of Panama from Colombia and the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty.
4. Students watched the first 15 minutes from the documentary Panama Canal (below).
5. Students were then divided into two groups. One side of the class making statements justifying US involvement, the other half opposing involvement.
