IB Test Prompts from Past Years

To give students an idea of how what we've been learning in class relates to the IB examinations, here are some test questions from previous Paper 3 (The Americas) tests:
  • To what extent were the wars of independence in Latin America due to the grievances of the Creoles against the peninsular Spaniards? Support your answer with reference to one independence movement.
  • To what extent were the ideas of the Enlightenment a cause of independence movements in either the United States or Latin America?
  • Using examples from at least one country, explain why the caudillos emerged in Latin America in the nineteenth century.
  • Compare and contrast the leadership roles of George Washington and Simon Bolivar in the Wars of Independence in the United States and Latin America.
  • With reference to at least two examples of slave rebellions, analyse the reaction to the rebellions in one country of the region.
  • Compare and contrast the role of leadership in two independence movements of the region.
  • “The nineteenth century did not bring Latin America the order and prosperity that the liberators had hoped for.” With reference to two or more countries, to what extent do you agree with this judgment?
