The Last Conquistador


Today students discussed several questions regarding public art:
  • What would you consider to controversial art?
  • Should taxpayer money be used to fund art? Controversial art?
  • What should be considered when deciding to fund public art?
Next, students were introduced to the debate in El Paso, Texas over the construction of a statue of Juan de Onate, a Spanish conquistador who attacked a village of Pueblo Indians. Students view this clip, then discussed the arguments for and against building the statue.
