Students responded to the following quote from The Patriot's History of the United States:
"Modern Indians are proud Americans who simultaneously embrace their Indian ethnicity and folk traditions, Christianity, western legal traditions, capitalism, and all aspects of mainstream society."
Afterward, they began reading an article about current realities on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota.
