Amistad

Today students watched a clip from the movie, Amistad. The clip showed the slave's journey from Africa. After the film were discussed and reflected on the lessons we can take from this dark period of US history. I want students to understand that knowledge of this history is important and useful in fighting against racism and the legacy of the slave trade.

Students also read a primary document from the period. The document was from an anti-slavery meeting of Quakers in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Students interpreted the language and examined the arguments the Quakers gave against the institution of slavery. This is an example of opposition to slavery.

The organization Anti-Slavery International has a great website to learn more about the transatlantic slave trade and things you can do to fight slavery today.
