The Civil Rights Movement

Over the past few classes students have been thinking and learning about the Civil Rights movement.
  1. Students though about race and identity, completing the sentence, "I am _____________"
  2. Students read an excerpt from the book Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria. The discussed their experiences with white privilege and the relationship between the dominant and subordinate groups in society.
  3. Students complete a race card - commenting on race in six words.
  4. Students researched major events from the Civil Rights movement and arranged them on this worksheet.
  5. Students viewed and read Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream Speech.
  6. I discussed importance of studying the Civil Rights movement as a grassroots movement and to look beyond major figures like Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks.
  7. Students viewed a series of photographs including Civil Rights leaders and photos of life in the south.[below]
  8. Students began a reading about the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi. They answered questions using this worksheet.
