- Students read chapter 7 in Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States. They completed these questions.
- Students read an article about conditions on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. They selected three passages and wrote reactions to each. They also wrote several questions at the end. They watched a TED Talk from the photographer whose photos accompany the essay [below].
- Students learned about recent events in Ferguson, Missouri. Students looked at a variety of sources and discussed larger issues of race and excessive police force.
- Students began thinking about stereotypes of Native Americans and the frequent appropriation of Native American themes, history, symbols and imagery by non-Native people. An example is the Washington Redskins. The listened to several songs.
- Students debated whether Cleveland should change the name of its mascot.
