Colonization

Agenda 9/25:
  1. Students worked on maps of Latin America. They labelled a series of events dealing with the Pre-Colonial and Colonial periods.
  2. Students debated the construction of a conquistador statue in El Paso. They watched a series of clips from the film The Last Conquistador.
HOMEWORK:

  • Explain this statement, referring specifically to people and events discussed in the chapter: “By 1810, a startling contrast existed. The Portuguese crown was closer than ever to Brazil. The Spanish crown, usurped by a foreigner, was further than ever from Spanish America.”
  • What events in Spain as well as greater Europe contributed to the Independence movements? Identify and explain at least two events.
  • Explain the concept of popular sovereignty. How did it influence the independence movements?
  • Who were the Peninsulars and Creoles? How did they view one another?
  • Creoles often had more in common with peninsulars than with mestizos and other members of the lower castes. How then did the creoles gather support to overthrow the peninsulars?
  • Who were Simon Bolivar and Jose de San Martin? Why are they important in the history of Latin American independence movements?
  • How did Latin American societies change as a result of the independence movements? What remained unchanged? Provide examples in your answer.
