Sharecropping and the Myth of the Lost Cause

Agenda 11/13:
  1. Students viewed clips from Birth of a Nation and Gone With the Wind. Students learned that these films shaped peoples views of the South before, during, and after the Civil War. Primarily, the ideas of the Old South and the Lost Cause.
  2. Students read a sharecropping contract from 1882 and compared it to descriptions in textbooks.
  3. Students discussed the veneration of Confederate leaders in a Socratic Seminar using this article.
