Quizzes - Born in Blood and Fire, Chapters 1&2

Sorry about the confusion (which was complicated further by my absence on Monday) concerning these tests. Below are the correct questions for the quizzes. I'll give you some time on Wednesday to ask me questions and go over things with a partner before taking the test.

Chapter 1 - QUIZ Wednesday 9/25

  • Identify and assess the relative advantages and disadvantages of the Europeans and Latin Americans at the time of the contact.
  • How were Cortes and Pizarro able to exploit existing conditions in the Aztec and Incan empires to conquer them?
  • Who were the Moors? What was the reconquest of Spain? How was it similar to Spanish conquest in the “new world”?
  • Briefly explain the involvement of Brazil in the “New World”. Why did the Portuguese turn to Africa for slaves? Why were African slaves “preferable”?
  • The Latin American civilizations established prior to European contact were civilized. To what extent do you agree with this statement? Include characteristics of the civilization in your answer.
  • Explain the conquests of Cortes and Pizarro. What happened? Who were their adversaries? How/why were they able to defeat them?
  • Briefly describe the differences in the use and treatment of slaves in Africa to the use of slaves in the “New World”.

Chapter 2 - QUIZ Tuesday 10/1

  • How did European economic needs and wants shape the organization of colonial society (i.e., social hierarchy and government structure)? Provide several examples in your explanation.
  • What was gracias al sacar? How did it undermine (contradict) the caste system?
  • What is transculturation? Where could it be seen in colonial society? Provide examples in your answer.
  • What was the purpose of the caste system? Describe some categories of the caste system.
  • In your own words, define the concept of hegemony. How did religion and patriarchy create hegemonic control by the minority Europeans in the New World?
  • What were the two major sources of income for the Spanish and Portuguese by the 1600. Explain the systems each country used to extract these commodities.
